The Temple was built for the ceremonies carried out by the Chinese emperor, who was, according to the ancient beliefs, the Son of Heaven. The emperor had to offer sacrifices to heaven in order to pray for a good harvest. The ceremony was of the utmost importance to the Chinese people, who believed that the smallest mistake could result in a bad year for the entire nation, especially during the winter solstice.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest is a must-see during your visit to the Temple of Heaven. The triple-gabled circular building is where the emperors performed ceremonies, including sacrifices and burning incense, to pray for good weather and abundant harvests. An interesting fact about this building is that it is completely wooden; no nails were used in its construction. This is quite remarkable considering the sheer size of the structure. While visitors can approach the hall and walk around it completely, please be aware that tourists are not allowed to enter the hall.
Rent a car/driver: You can easily rent a driver for the day in Bali and actually an easy way to do it is through the Grab app. You can rent a driver for 2-6 hours which will be enough time to take you to the gates of heaven.
7 months into having taken my trip, I can honestly say it DID. After breakfast at your hotel, hop in a car with your guide and visit some of the highlights just outside of Kuala Lumpur on a day trip. First up is Ah Ma House, a traditional bakery that is famous for its kuih kapit, a type of egg waffle often served during festivals and holidays. As I mentioned earlier in the blog post, there is an alternate route down and therefore, also an alternate route up. You can completely avoid the guards and security at the start of the trailhead if you follow the Moanalua Trail. The hike begins at the Moanalua Valley road trail and is a 9.3-mile round trip. We had such a blast with Captain Greg on our manatee adventure. He was very knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife. He even found manatees for us to swim with at the end of the season!
